Overview
The Alliance for California Traditional Arts is dedicated to supporting and sustaining folk and traditional arts throughout the state. Through its Arts in Corrections program, statewide artist convenings, and two small grants programs, the alliance has supported and made visible the work of culture bearers from diverse backgrounds throughout California. Each year, the organization makes grants to about 40 small arts organizations, and 16 apprentice artists across the state. This grant will support its adaptation planning and implementation, advancing the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy by strengthening an organization dedicated to cultural communities that have little access to other forms of support.

for an exit grant for the Community Leadership Project
Throughout the Community Leadership Project, the Alliance for California Traditional Arts has successfully served as a regranting intermediary and technical assistance provider for small-budget cultural organizations in three priority regions: San Francisco Bay Area, Central Coast, and San Joaquin Valley. With this exit grant, the group will focus its capacity-building efforts on financial sustainability, asset management, and leadership development. The Irvine and Hewlett foundations will equally co-fund the exit grant to this organization.
for the videoconferencing project
Alliance for California Traditional Arts is the only nonprofit in California dedicated to supporting and sustaining the folk and traditional arts at the statewide level, and serves as the California Arts Council’s official partner in this capacity. With three offices (Fresno, San Francisco, Los Angeles) to serve a large statewide constituency, the ability to link staff and board members would improve intra-agency communications and effectiveness. In addition, connectivity would provide opportunities for the larger arts field the Alliance serves to attend meetings, trainings, and presentations via the system.
for the Living Cultures Grants Program Bay Area projects
The Alliance for California Traditional Arts is the only nonprofit dedicated to supporting and sustaining folk and traditional arts statewide, and serves as the California Arts Council’s official partner in this capacity. Its grants programs support exemplary projects in traditional arts in California, with slightly larger awards for those demonstrating significant impact on a particular cultural tradition. Hewlett Foundation support is designated for performing arts awardees based in the Bay Area, who are selected by Living Cultures Grants Program’s expert peer panel after rigorous outreach and technical assistance by Alliance staff.
