MENLO PARK, Calif. – Elizabeth Peters, an attorney who is an expert in tax laws affecting foundations and charities, will join The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation as associate general counsel, Hewlett officials announced today.

Peters currently is an associate with the firm of Caplin & Drysdale in Washington, D.C., where her practice focuses on tax-exempt organizations, international tax law, and corporate law.

At the Foundation, she will have a wide range of duties, including advising its staff on legal issues at the state, federal, and international levels; further developing the Foundation’s systems for complying with applicable laws; drafting and reviewing legal documents; and assisting in staff training.

“Elizabeth is ideally suited to work on the broad range of legal issues the Foundation faces,” said Foundation General Counsel Lawrence Mendenhall. “We’re looking forward to welcoming her to the team.”

From 2000 to 2002, before she became an attorney, Peters was director of strategic planning for Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, where she developed corporate partnerships and strategy. Earlier in her career, in 1999 and 2000, she worked as a financial analyst at Goldman Sachs.

Peters has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard University and a law degree from Yale Law School, where she was a senior editor of The Yale Law Journal.
