MENLO PARK, Calif. – Americans for the Arts has awarded its 2010 Emerging Leader Award to Marc Vogl, an officer with the Hewlett Foundation’s Performing Arts Program, for his grantmaking and other work to develop a new generation of arts administrators, Foundation officials announced today.
The award, given to one person annually, recognizes exceptional young arts professionals who demonstrate exemplary leadership, innovative thinking, and a commitment to advancing the arts in their local, state, or national communities.
“Marc’s extraordinary work in the area of grantmaking and his passion to support the arts leaders of tomorrow exemplify what it means to be an Emerging Leader,” Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts, said in a prepared statement before the awards ceremony at the Americans for the Arts Half-Century Summit in Baltimore on June 26.
“We’re delighted with this recognition of Marc’s dedication to this work,” said John E. McGuirk, director of the Foundation’s Performing Arts Program. “Particularly in this time of rapid change, addressing the health of arts organizations is the best way to ensure the arts themselves will continue to flourish.”
Among other activities, Vogl was a driving force in initiating a partnership with the James Irvine Foundation to provide professional development grants to emerging arts leaders throughout California. He and his Irvine partners are also speaking to arts groups throughout the state and nation on the importance of career development and job satisfaction to retain early and mid-career arts administrators.
The Americans for the Arts’ Emerging Leaders Network identifies and cultivates the next generation of arts leaders in America. It is a way for new leaders to share their interests as they develop their skills and their commitment to the arts. The Emerging Leaders program works with professionals who are either new to the field, with up to five years of experience, or are 35 years of age or younger.
