As the United States moves toward a clean energy economy, the federal government today announced a new, stronger climate target, as it fulfilled its obligation to report on its commitments on climate through 2035. The announcement outlines actions from various entities across the country — including states, cities, and the private sector — that, combined, can meet the goal and help ensure the U.S. stays on track to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Below is a statement from Jonathan Pershing, Hewlett Foundation Environment Program Director and former Special Presidential Envoy for Climate for the U.S. government.

“Today’s announcement provides a clear roadmap of how the United States can continue its efforts to address the climate crisis and secure a sustainable, prosperous future for the nation. The new target, of reducing emissions 61-66% below 2005 levels, sets a bold example, keeping the nation on track for a net-zero clean energy economy by 2050. It also sends a strong global signal, outlining a credible path to decarbonization that promotes both climate action and enhances economic growth. We believe these climate and economic policies present our nation with an opportunity to increase access to good-paying jobs across the United States, build the clean energy economy of the future, and ensure our continued global competitiveness in a rapidly changing world. We thank our grantees for the work they have done to educate decision-makers on the critical connection between a clean energy economy and a thriving future for all Americans. Hewlett also looks forward to working with states, industry, and global partners to advance decarbonization efforts and tackle this global challenge. Together we can pave the way toward a healthier planet and a more inclusive and prosperous economy.”
