Overview
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (CFAT), is a non-profit operating foundation in Stanford, California. CFAT is also the originator of the Carnegie Unit, the time-based means of measuring educational attainment. This is a supplemental grant to support the production and dissemination of the Carnegie Foundation's report on the Carnegie Unit--a comprehensive review that documents its' history, weaknesses and strengths. The Carnegie Unit has been hotly debated in recent years, as time is a poor proxy for learning and a number of higher educational and K-12 jurisdictions have begun to re-think it's use--shifting to "competency-based" models as better approximations of student learning.
