Overview
The rise of the Internet and resulting proliferation of news sites has helped to promulgate information of questionable quality—a quality which is often difficult and time consuming for the average citizen to ascertain. Efforts such as Factcheck.org and PolitiFact.com emerged around the 2008 election cycle to monitor statements by major U.S. political actors. These organizations have gained a significant audience, and early research suggests that their impact may be significant as a deterrent to false statements by public officials. This grant to the American Press Institute would support further research to: identify fact-checking best practices; develop strategies to help newsrooms address expected pushback from political actors; understand the impact of these efforts; and disseminate results to the news industry.
