Overview
The Fossil Fuel Reduction Project is a multifunder, multiyear project of the New Venture Fund. It focuses on slowing and capping the growth of tar sands development at a level consistent with global scenarios for atmospheric levels of carbon not exceeding 450 ppm. Producing a barrel of tar sands oil is about 25 percent more carbon intensive than producing a barrel of conventional oil. The project’s strategy is threefold: (1) block infrastructure expansions, mainly pipeline expansions in the United States and Canada, and new tar sands mines in Alberta; (2) improve regulations in Alberta to include the full cost of water, air, habitat ,and community impacts; and (3) reduce demand for tar sands oil in the United States and in Europe through policies such as low-carbon fuel standards or the fuel quality directive.
