Overview
We recommend project support to the Transportation Program at the Energy Foundation (San Francisco, CA) for work on the next round of vehicle efficiency standards in California. The past year has been a momentous one, with the federal government establishing new fuel efficiency standards for cars. These new national standards are based on regulations California established several years ago. As the federal government and California work together on designing the first set of joint standards, California regulators are pursuing the next round of state standards. These net set of standards (known commonly as Pavley Standards) will be a crucial input to the design of the national standard and any future standards set at the national level. We recommend support to the Energy Foundation to help ensure the technical underpinnings of the new California standards are as strong as possible. The next six months are the crucial time period to inform the state’s decision-making process.
