Overview
Research centers have more difficulty than almost any other type of social institution determining metrics for success. As foundations and government agencies become more interested in tying funding to such metrics, this has become a pressing problem for such centers. A grant to the School for Advanced Research would support a workshop to bring together representatives from 14 premier centers for advanced research to create a peer learning cohort that will grapple with defining outcomes and sharing metrics with the end goal of increasing the centers' collective ability to evaluate the social impact of their efforts. This will be a follow on workshop to one hosted in June 2009, which was attended by President Paul Brest, though not funded by the Hewlett Foundation. The second workshop will produce a white paper that will be disseminated widely to other research centers, foundations, and government agencies.
