Grants to this Grantee
for improving reading and math instruction in lower primary school in Uganda and Kenya
Evidence from East Africa suggests that students are not acquiring essential reading and math skills, even by the end of their elementary school education. In 2008, we gave a planning grant to the Aga Khan Foundation USA (AKF) to develop a model for teaching reading and math in the first three grades of primary school. In 2009, a second grant went to applying this model in two districts of Uganda and two districts in Kenya. This supplemental grant would allow AKF to continue implementing the math and reading instruction for another five months. The additional time is essential to see whether and how the instructional approach improves learning outcomes over the course of two academic school years.
