Overview
Orthodox economics, centered on rational individual choice theory and free-market policy stances, has dominated economics scholarship and teaching since the 1920s. The New School for Social Research economists Teresa Ghilarducci and William Milberg will direct a research project addressing why alternatives to orthodoxy struggle to become established in academia and policy. They will author a paper on why heterodox economics has not taken hold, which will then form the basis for a fall 2019 convening of selected economists and writers in New York. The conference will address four themes: strengths and weaknesses in heterodox theory; curriculum; advancing heterodox student careers in policy; and implications for philanthropy.

for support of the Journalism + Design lab
The Journalism + Design lab at The New School is dedicated to nurturing a resilient free press for the future. Through partnerships, openly licensed curricula, and hands-on mentorship, it builds pathways for more people to participate in their news and information ecosystems.
for “In Common: Romare Bearden and New Approaches to Art, Race, and Economy”
The Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy at the New School advances research to understand structural inequalities and fosters cross-disciplinary thinking about power, structure, design, politics, economics, and society. This grant supports “In Common: Romare Bearden and New Approaches to Art, Race & Economy” — a symposium, exhibition, and suite of media that considers the artist’s legacy and the significance of his art to the circumstances facing Black communities and other communities of color. The grant supports the Performing Arts Program overall strategic framework by elevating the relationships of artists, equity, and the solidarity economy.
for the Tishman Environment and Design Center
This grant will provide support to the New School’s Tishman Environment and Design Center to hire a senior fellow to help leverage federal and philanthropic investments in green, adaptive economic opportunities tied to renewable energy and climate mitigation — in particular helping to better connect the complex web of local, regional, and national environmental justice groups as they collaborate in implementing climate and environmental justice goals.
