Overview
The Institute for Strategic and Equitable Development (ISED), in collaboration with its implementation partner KHA, Inc., has facilitated a philanthropy-focused professional development series since 2016. An effort aligned with that series is the Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity in Environmental Philanthropy (InDEEP) project, which has engaged over 300 individuals representing numerous organizations. The goal of InDEEP is to increase resources to entities led by people of color and from indigenous communities. In pursuing that goal, ISED plans to engage foundation presidents and senior organizational leads through a series of one- to two-day professional development sessions over the course of an implementation year (April to December 2018) and three subsequent years in West Coast, Midwest, and East Coast hubs. The aim of these annual sessions is to provide training that addresses implicit bias and systemic inequities, peer-to-peer support, and skilled guidance on how foundation leaders can affect synergies between their missions and 21st-century demographic realities. This multi-funder project grant will help ISED in its organization of the annual West Coast session.

Grants to this Grantee
for general operating support
The Institute for Strategic and Equitable Development (ISED) provides support to nonprofits addressing issues of racial equity and justice. This support will enable ISED to work on racial equity and justice issues related to the environment, reproductive health, and economic mobility.
for enhancing the diversity of climate and conservation boards
The Institute for Strategic and Equitable Development promotes impactful grantmaking, investments, and economic development for communities of color. Because inclusive environmental organizations can more effectively build authentic, reciprocal relationships with diverse partners and local communities, this grant supports the institute’s work with partners Keecha Harris and Associates, InPartnership Consulting, and Ali Webb Strategies to empower climate and conservation organizations to build inclusive boards and leadership teams, and support a network of Black leaders for nonprofit board service via an InDEEP Initiative recruitment program. (Western Conservation Substrategy: Build the Conditions for Enduring Conservation)
for sponsorship of the Presidents' Forum
The Institute for Strategic and Equitable Development, in collaboration with its implementation partners, KHA Inc. and Ali Webb Strategies, organizes the Presidents’ Forum on Racial Equity in Philanthropy. The purpose of the Presidents’ Forum is to create a constructive and transformative space where foundation CEOs can grapple with racial equity-related leadership challenges they are facing, share how they approach these issues, develop goals for their roles as leaders, and glean practical insights from their peers toward developing solutions. This grant will support additional 2022 activities of the forum, which will widen the current reach of the initiative into the broader pool of U.S. foundation presidents and CEOs.
