Overview
The NAACP created the Environmental and Climate Justice Program in recognition that more than 65 percent of African Americans live within 30 miles of a coal plant and that low-income communities and communities of color are disproportionately affected by climate change. The program aims to reduce pollutants that harm community health and cause climate change, as well as to promote public engagement on energy efficiency and clean-energy policies and practices. This grant will support the program’s work identifying, training, and supporting clean energy leaders and activists among NAACP’s 1,200 local branches, 300 youth and college groups, and 25,000 active local volunteer organizations across the nation.

This is a supplemental grant to the NAACP for its Environmental and Climate Justice Program, which works with local chapters to close dirty coal plants, support energy efficiency and clean energy, and defend the EPA's ability to implement the Clean Air Act. The grant will allow the Program to hire a communications coordinator.
