Overview
The co-investigators for this research are leading scholars of Congressional primaries. They will examine an often debated but rarely studied issue - the impact of timing of primary elections. They will use data from 1984 to 2016 to assess the consequences of congressional primary dates on the competitiveness, outcomes, and expenses of primary and general elections. States continue to tinker with various aspects of primaries, and frequently propose and enact changes to primary dates. This research also could help inform broader debate about other changes to the American electoral process.
