Overview
This grant will provide funds to the Conservation Action Trust to support low carbon and sustainable solutions to India's energy needs. Specifically, this grant will allow CAT to provide technical and legal support to local activists. CAT’s work seeks to protect air quality due to the ill effects of coal fired thermal power projects in the areas CAT works. CAT will also provide technical and legal support for due process and environmental integrity as it relates to electricity production and the fuel sources for power generation. The plethora of coal projects in India has led to the rapid growth of community groups opposing these projects for a variety of reasons including displacement, loss of jobs, loss of livelihoods, increased cost of living, deprivation of access to natural resources, pollution, health impacts, and loss of biodiversity. Delaying, the coal fired power projects coming up in India which are leading to destruction of environment and irreparable impairment of human health is critical. CAT will focus on projects in critically polluted areas where existing coal campaigns are operating beginning in Maharashtra and Gujarat.CAT works with a dozen partner organizations.
